The City of New Westminster

The City of New Westminster is 15.62 square kilometers and consists of 14 unique neighborhoods on two larger parcels of land (Queensborough and the southwest side of the Burrard Peninsula). New Westminster is located approximately 19km east of Vancouver on the north bank of the Fraser River on the Burrard Peninsula. New Westminster neighbors Burnaby and Coquitlam and rests across the Fraser River from Surrey and Delta. A portion of New Westminster called Queensborough is located on the eastern tip of Lulu Island, adjacent to Richmond.

In the 2021 Canadian census conducted by Statistics Canada, New Westminster had a population of 78,916 living in 36,099 of its 37,737 total private dwellings, a change of 11.2% from its 2016 population of 70,996.

New Westminster is served by School District 40 New Westminster, and offers one secondary school, two middle schools, and nine elementary schools. New Westminster is also home to four post-secondary institutions: Douglas College, Justice Institute of British Columbia, Boucher Institute, and CG Masters School of 3D Animation and Visual Effects.

Major parklands and city gardens located in New Westminster include Queen’s Park, Westminster Pier Park, Friendship Gardens & Tipperary Park, Hume Park, Sapperton Park, Brunette-Fraser Regional Greenway Biking Trail, Moody Park, Waterfront Park and Esplanade.
